A well-loaded skip holds far more than a badly-packed one, and packing smartly can genuinely save you the cost of a second skip. Follow these ten tips to make every cubic yard count.

Plan before you load

  1. Break down bulky items such as furniture, pallets and cupboards so they lie flat.
  2. Load heavy, flat items first to create a stable base at the bottom.
  3. Fill gaps with smaller pieces of waste as you go.
  4. Keep long items to the sides so the middle stays free for bulk.
  5. Distribute weight evenly so the skip is safe to lift.

Load the right waste

  1. Keep soil and rubble in the smaller builders skips where heavy waste is allowed.
  2. Separate prohibited items like fridges and mattresses before you start.
  3. Flatten cardboard and packaging to save space.
  4. Do not fill above the top edge — overloaded skips cannot be collected safely or legally.
  5. Book the right size from the start to make loading far easier.

Choosing the correct size is half the battle. Compare skip sizes or book online when you are ready to go.
