Most household and building waste can go straight in a skip, but a handful of items are restricted by law and need separate handling. Getting this right keeps your collection on schedule and avoids extra charges.
What you can put in a skip
- General household junk and non-electrical furniture
- Building rubble — brick, concrete, tiles and hardcore (use a smaller, heavy-waste skip)
- Timber, wood and off-cuts
- Garden waste — soil, turf, branches and green waste
- Metal, plastics and packaging
What can’t go in a skip
- Fridges, freezers and air-conditioning units
- Mattresses (these need separate processing)
- TVs, monitors and electrical items (WEEE)
- Paint, oils, solvents and other liquids or chemicals
- Asbestos, gas bottles, tyres, batteries and clinical waste
Mattresses and fridges — we can still take them
These are restricted from the skip itself, but Interscan can collect and dispose of them for you as add-ons when you book: mattresses at £15 and fridges at £20 each. Just add them at the extras step and we’ll handle the proper disposal.
Why the rules exist
Restricted items either contain hazardous materials or must be recycled through a dedicated route. As an Environment Agency registered waste carrier (licence CBDU568181), we’re required to dispose of them correctly — and doing so protects you from fly-tipping liability, which stays with the waste producer.
