Whether you need a permit comes down to one thing: where the skip will sit. If it’s on your own land, you don’t. If it’s on a public road, you do. Here’s what that means in practice.
On your driveway or private land
No permit is needed. As long as the skip sits entirely on your property, you’re free to fill it. This is the simplest and cheapest option, so use your driveway if you can.
On a public road
If the skip has to go on the road or verge, the local council requires a skip permit (sometimes called a licence). This covers the skip being on the public highway and usually comes with conditions — reflective markings, cones and lights at night.
We arrange the permit for you
When you book a road placement with Interscan, you don’t have to deal with the council yourself. We’ll arrange the permit on your behalf and fit the required safety lighting and markings. Because permits are issued by the council, they can take a few working days, so it’s worth booking ahead if you know you’ll need one.
What you can do to help
- Tell us at the time of booking that the skip will go on the road.
- Keep the area clear so we can position the skip safely.
- Don’t move the skip once it’s placed — its position is tied to the permit.
